QUESTION:

Is is really necessary to wear shoes while doing cardio or lifting weights?

MARC'S ANSWER:

That’s an interesting question! In fact, it’s not necessary but shoes do provide some level of protection from the weights, stubbing toes, slipping off the equipment and traction depending on your cardio activity. They also provide proper support when weight is used that would compress your spine. Squats for example. And if your cardiovascular activity includes running, then proper footwear is a must for the potential to avoid injury and help prevent shin splints.

However, all said and done, it’s a simple matter of personal preference and it really doesn’t matter minus the above concerns.

Working at home, if you are more comfortable without them, go for it. It won’t make any difference in your muscle building and fat loss efforts. There’s something to be said for comfort.
