As a reader of this blog, it’s really important you understand all the aspects to your health and where you can get solid information to make informed consumer choices. If you don’t, it’s all too easy to get caught up in big names, promoting cures and fixes that simply have no basis of proof. This “fitness” industry is littered with fraud. As much if not more than the banking and financial industry. But the difference is… there’s not much media an news and no congressional hearings.
You get screwed, they get rich… life moves on.
Oprah and Her Influence on the Nation’s Health
I’m going to make a bold claim here … but nobody has more influence on the health and fitness industry than Oprah. Not even the Surgeon General or my good friend Tom Venuto. If Oprah wants to make you a star, then it’s a done deal. She could have picked thousands of fitness experts but she picked Dr. Oz.
Oprah may have affected the nation’s health the most when she picked Dr. Mehmet Oz as her resident health expert. Much like Dr. Phil, he started off a guest, then a regular and then his own TV shows and syndication. Now you’ve got Dr. Oz with radio programs, newspaper columns and his own TV show where he mixes pretty good advice with some very questionable advice.
If you think this is an attack on Dr. Oz, it’s not really. It’s an attack on a industry with all too much power to make a difference and it consistently does the same.
Dr. Oz is a cardiac surgeon and professor at Columbia University. I’m sure he knows his stuff about the heart but he dispenses advice on all kinds of fitness things. Most recently his March 28th, 2012 broadcast on the 5 Fat Busters and 5 Body Types pushed me over the edge.
Spot Reduction is NOT a Myth (according to Dr. Oz)
The premise of the show was simply that there’s 5 different body types and they all hold fat differently. You can use certain meal combinations for that body type to block, burn and target fat. Combined with some specific supplements, you can effectively spot reduce thru nutrition and supplementation.

Here just one tip after one fat burning meal and listed supplement.
Bonus Fat Buster: Yoga. Do the Downward Dog pose: Get down on your hands and knees and put your bottom toward the sky. Hold yourself up like this as you lift your body up. This pose can help selectively burn fat in the upper bar of your body. Do for two minutes each day.
Doing the Downward Dog pose can selectively burn fat in the upper “bar” of your body? I can only guess it’s PART but whoever did the editing didn’t catch that. Can’t blame them. There’s probably 100 articles a day on this site.
By this logic I can do crunches to burn fat off my abs!

I’ve written several posts on how to evaluate a supplement. In order to decide if a dietary supplement is right for you, you must keep an open mind and a watchful eye. Open mind meaning you should look beyond the claims and try and do some investigation yourself.
Raspberry Ketone: Miracle Fat-Burner in a Bottle!

Google Sucks for Supplement Research
Do some searching now for “Raspberry Ketone” and you’ll get 2 pages a bogus, advertised and slick marketing. The ONLY entry that was slightly unbiased was Wikipedia.org (questionable itself as people can edit) that listed one study in 1970 that showed promise in rats given raspberry ketones for fat loss and nothing for humans. Even at 200 times the dosage, there was nothing in humans that promoted weight loss.
All the other sites are keyword laced, promotional materials written by whoever with links to buy the supplement.
During the show, weight loss expert Lisa Lynn came out and when Dr. Oz asked her about this miracle supplement and how she found out about it… her answer was..

Intrigued, I looked for any such research using Google. Nothing. Just that one 1970′s study that everybody selling this is piggy-backed off of and is making wild claims.
One study, done on rats in 1970, that showed no human improvements even at 200 times the dosage is what constitutes research, research research?
I think the bottom line here is people need to get paid to pay bills, buy cars, eat at fine restaurants. There’s always a price and you can find somebody to say whatever it is you need them to say to make a great show.
Dr. Oz started off with legitimate advice and I think what you’ve got now is the same issues that plagues any industry. You need FRESH ideas to keep the show running. You cannot keep the show alive by saying eat less than you burn, eat right and exercise. Try just one article a day on that topic and in about a year, you’ll go crazy. Your readers will leave as you are now boring.
Dr. Oz isn’t a huckster. I think he’s an entertainer and if you approach his show as such, you might find some good stuff. The meals he listed in the links above for his fat burning meals aren’t bad! That was the best part of that show. Those were legitimate. Not in terms of burning fat thru nutrition in specific areas but just overall, healthy good looking meals.
Frankly, I’m thankful I was born way before this internet age. It’s worse now than having those bodybuilding magazines. How you guys find out legitimate information anymore is beyond me.
In the meantime, I’m going to the gym to do weight training (lift something heavy) which I do about 4 days a week and at the moment, eat less than I need which is burning off that fat. But that’s boring and not nearly as exciting.
