Underground Bodybuilding Tips – Is the Rumor True?

Undergound Bodybuilding Tips Membership Site

I’m lurking on a MNU (Muscle Nerd University) call that Jeff Anderson does for his Optimum Anabolics members.  He goes off on some tangent and tells the people on the call…

“I’m launching a new membership site.”

My ears perked up and I heard every word after that.  In fact, I downloaded the MP3 of the call and spliced out his exact words.

I liked how he said it’s his way of thumbing his nose at the industry when everybody is charging an arm and leg for their programs.

Stay tuned!  When this launches, I’ll let you know.

Do You Fit in Like This?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I can’t tell you how many times I feel like that cat when I go to my own gym. Sure I know how to workout, I’ve been doing this for 17 years now. But I still feel as if somehow I don’t fit in with all the crazy workouts, supersets, high volume training and intensity I put forth.

Just the other day I was doing an exercise called rack pulls. I affectionally called them “mini-deads.” Just as a joke of course. But the trainer gave me the eye like I was doing some crazy exercise and that look.. you know.

“Sheesh… what a gym moron.”

I feel out of place because lately I’m being bombarded with the functional strength stuff written by strength coaches telling me how to be a bodybuilder. They think I want to do clean and jerks or only compound exercise. How could I be so vain as to just want to look good? What’s wrong with me?

Then I found this interview between T-Nation and Dr. Ellington Darden. How did they read my mind!

T-Nation: There also seems to be a lot of emphases on “functional strength” and performance in the weight training world, even for those that don’t play a sport. I think this may be because many of the people writing articles and publishing books these days work with athletes, not bodybuilders. Has cosmetic bodybuilding been lost?

Darden:I think you’re right. Bodybuilding has been lost with all the emphasis on functional strength, which is to imply that bodybuilding for cosmetic purposes is of no value. To look better physically, more than any single factor, is the primary reason people exercise. I’m all for bodybuilding for bodybuilding’s sake alone.

Amen!

I’m a bodybuilder by nature. I like it. I do it for health but I started when I was young for cosmetic reasons.

Critics Slam Vitamin E Study

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Over the last few months, vitamins have gotten a very bad rap. Especially Vitamin E intake and those who smoke.

“The study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found that over the course of a decade there was a 5% increased risk of developing lung cancer for every 100mg of vitamin E supplement taken daily.”

At first glance, you might start to question your Vitamin E supplementation if you indeed take it. Especially if you are reading this post and are a current smoker. But hold on… there’s more.

But one leading expert in vitamin E, Professor Maret Traber from Oregon State University, pointed out that in spite of the researchers’ conclusion, the abstract from the study admitted: “The risk of supplemental vitamin E was largely confined to current smokers.”

“It would seem the best strategy [for avoiding lung cancer] is to quit smoking,” she said.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition said: “These results must be placed in the proper context. There is an unequivocal connection between smoking and increased lung cancer risk. Within this cohort, current smokers were 2,400% more likely to develop lung cancer. Contrast that with a trend toward a 5% increase in risk that the researchers observed with supplemental vitamin E — and this was mainly isolated to high vitamin E and mainly in current smokers. The headline associated with this study should simply be ‘Smokers at risk.’”

It’s interesting how an entire industry can be shaken up by just a single study.

Waist to Hip Ratio

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Question:

The waist to hip ratio or WHI doesn’t seem to be any better of a predictor than the BMI because neither one takes into lean body mass.  How good of a predictor can this measurement actually be when it only takes into account fat in one area of the body, not the overall body fat percentage?

Answer:

The WHR ratio was designed in or around 1993 as a replacement for an indication of health for the BMI.  Many health professionals including myself don’t find the BMI or the WHR to be useful as a sole indicator of health.

While it can be useful in some aspects, body composition is much more accurate and a better determination of overall health as you have pointed out.

In more recent years, the WHR has taken fire for being not such a good indicator of overall health either!

* A MIND-BLOWING “superset strategy” I promise you’ve NEVER heard of…and it will jack up your arms with an extra 1/4 inch of solid muscle in as little as 1 WEEK!

* Why “high volume” and “high intensity” training has become the most MISUNDERSTOOD mass-gaining strategy in bodybuilding…and how to REALLY use these strategies to pack on mass FAST!
